Natürlich habe ich den Earthshot Prize mit dem Earth Overshoot Day verwechselt. (Wer sagt denn im Deutschen schon Erdüberlastungstag oder Welterschöpfungstag?) Falls Ihr auch nicht genau wisst, was das erste ist, hilft Wikipedia weiter:
The Earthshot Prize is a global environmental prize that is awarded to five winners each year for their contributions towards environmentalism. It was first awarded in 2021 and is planned to be awarded annually until 2030. Each winner receives a grant of £1 million to continue their environmental work. The five categories were inspired by the UN Sustainable Development Goals; they are ‘restoration and protection of nature’, ‘air cleanliness’, ‘ocean revival’, ‘waste-free living’ and ‘climate action’.
The prize was launched in 2020 by Prince William and the biologist and natural historian David Attenborough. The winners are selected by the Earthshot Prize Council, which includes William and Attenborough.
Wie ich nun erfahren habe, wird der Preis von NVIDIA gesponsert; sie nennen es “joining forces” und “teaming up”, aber es handelt sich selbstverständlich um Sponsoring. Wie Ihr wohl wisst, handelt es sich bei NVIDIA um den nicht nur selbsternannten “World Leader in Artificial Intelligence Computing“, den vom AI-Boom profitierende wertvollste Konzern überhaupt. Von der Ausbeutung seltener Erden für die Chipherstellung bis zum ressourcenfressenden Bau und Betrieb immer neuer Datencenter wirft der durch den schwindelerregende Höhen steigenden Bedarf an Computing umgreifende Techhunger riesige Gewinne ab. Und sorgt gleichzeitig für die Beschleunigung des Klimawandels, wie Ketan Joshi bereits letztes Jahr feststellen durfte:
In a new report, we find NVIDIA, a beneficiary of the AI boom, has seen its supply chain emissions grow 725% since 2020. But we also find that the emissions from the use of its products isn’t disclosed; despite the company supplying potential carbon bomb sites (like the biggest proposed gas plant on the planet). With that in mind, we produced our own conservative estimate, finding that the climate impact from 2025’s use of NVIDIA’S AI products is on par with the state-owned Russian Coal company.
Hmmm, an wen könnte ich denn jetzt den Award für das Greenwashing des Jahres verleihen? ♻️ 🏆
